Accountant / Senior Accountant

The Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA)*, the private fundraising and alumni relations organization for the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is recruiting for a Accountant / Senior Accountant.  This position assists in the organization’s budgeting and internal reporting needs, performs specialized financial analysis and provides needed support.   The Accountant / Senior Accountant will perform routine and ad hoc general accounting tasks, including maintaining the fixed asset sub-ledger.


Please note:  This position can be filled as an Accountant or Senior Accountant Director, depending on the skills/experience of selected candidate. This position will be a combination of remote, in-office, and on-site work environments.

Primary Responsibilities

Budgeting / Financial Planning & Analysis / Reporting

  • Collaborate in the development of routine reports and reporting mechanisms that support the efficient delivery of relevant and timely information to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Perform financial modeling, complete projects, perform trend analyses, prepare routine activity summaries, and support ad-hoc queries.
  • Work with Finance and other WFAA staff members to enhance our data mining and reporting capabilities, both within and outside of our core accounting system records and reports.

General Accounting

  • Perform general ledger analysis and account reconciliations, as assigned.
  • Assist in completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual ledger closing activities.
  • Assist with execution of annual audit, including preparation of related schedules and analysis.
  • Provide backup support for various accounting processes.
  • Posting of various journal entries, including but not limited to gift revenue, life-income pools, payroll, etc.

Other Duties

  • Assist the Director of Financial Reporting, Controller, and/or other staff members with completion of various Finance projects as requested or assigned.
  • Assist in developing documentation and training materials aimed at helping all parties consistently and accurately record financial information in all areas of the accounting system.
  • Help to develop and refine departmental processes to meet department and organizational needs, with an emphasis on efficiency and adherence to internal controls.
  • Aid in the development and execution of quality assurance procedures to ensure accurate, timely and consistent recording of transactions.

Requirements and Qualifications

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related Business field.
  • 3 + years of accounting experience.
  • General Ledger system experience.

Senior Accountant: 

  • 5 + years of accounting experience

 Other Qualifications:

  • CPA and/or CMA certifications.
  • Accounting experience in a nonprofit
  • Combined public and private accounting experience, as well as experience in non-profit settings.
  • Tax experience.
